The Barton Warnock Environmental Education Center in Terlingua, Texas, sits at the eastern entrance to Big Bend Ranch State Park. It interprets 570 million years of geological history and the five biological landscapes of the Chihuahuan Desert, a region better known as the Big Bend.
Karen's "Barton Warnock T. Rex" is displayed as part of a large mural at the Center, and spotlights the biggest star of the Cretaceous Period, Tyrannosaurus Rex. Whether T. Rex was a fierce and agile hunter or an opportunist not above a scavanged meal of carrion, Karen's portrait shows just how intimidating a Tyrannosaur would have appeared.
Texas' Big Bend region is a remarkable landscape and, although remote, is well worth the miles and the time needed to see and appreciate it. If you're in the neighborhood of Terlingua on the first Saturday of November, be sure to stop by for the world's best-known chili cook-off.
