Client:   Lewis & Clark State Historical Site, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, and Illinois Capital Development Board
Copyright:   © 2002 by Karen Carr
Media:   Digital
Pictured:   William Clark, Toussaint Charbonneau and Kickapoo representative
Geologic age:   Modern

Notes:

French Canadian fur trapper Toussaint Charbonneau was a central member of the Corps of Discovery, providing translation and guide services to the corps. Charbonneau had lived among both the Hidatsa and Mandan Native Americans, tribes Lewis & Clark would encounter on their journey.

Not a military member of the corps, Charbonneau participated as a contracted guide. He brought with him one of the most famous participants in the Corps' travels, his wife, Sacagawea.

Karen's mural shows Clark and Charbonneau meeting with a Kickapoo representative.
