"Paleozoic Arch," Dunkleosteus detail
Client:   The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology
Copyright:   © 2002 by Karen Carr
Media:   Digital
Pictured:   Dunkleosteus
Geologic age:   Devonian
Did you know?

Dunkleosteus was a heavily armored fish of the late Devonian, living about 400 million years ago.

Dunkleosteus wasn't a shark—in fact, it may have fed on sharks—but a placoderm. Fossil remains give no clue to coloration, of course, but Karen chose the black-and-white coloration of the modern orca to suggest the size and power of this ancient hunter.

Notes:

Karen's Paleozoic Arch for The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology is a series of large separate images, composited into a single arch. When displayed at the museum, each segment of the complete image appears on a three-dimensional panel.
