Description:   Hallucigenia is one of the most remarkable creatures from the fabulously rich Burgess Shale deposits in Canada's Yoho National Park. A small creature—most specimens are well under an inch in length—Hallucigenia features an unusual body construction, with a bulbous head, stiff legs and spine-like tentacles on its back and connected to the animal's gut.

Did you know?   Cambrian creatures from the Burgess Shale formations of Alberta, Canada, are some of the strangest-looking animals modern observers see in museums. Hallucigenia is particularly weird, so much so that even scientists have differed about what it looked like in life.

The image shown here represents an earlier understanding of the animal. This image, for The Field Museum, is the most current interpretation of Hallucigenia.
